Big Reds Are Go!

SML MED LGE

How do you know it’s winter? Is it the bare windswept trees, that unmistakable smell of roaring log fires, the sound of grass crunching under your feet first thing in the morning, the sight of your breath, the cold morning sunshine, the scarves, the hats and the gloves?

Nope. You know it’s winter when you swap your regular undies for thermals, when you get up in the dark, go to work in the dark and come home in the dark. It’s that time of year when your heating system will more than likely pack it in. It’s when the cold evening air smells of exhaust, and worst of all you’re forced to barbecue in a balaclava, which apart from looking ridiculous, can also be pretty dangerous.

Winter is back with a vengeance, and that means big reds are go: Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, and more – wines with weight, wines with layers, wines that have the capacity to restore your warmth from the inside out. This month we have selected some of our picks from around the globe, winter warming reds with some well know varietals as well as some exciting less common ones.

So, as the mercury continues its annual plunge south, here are 12 of our current favourite reds – we hope you love them as much as we do.

Happy Drinking!

  • 1. POITEVIN 2015
    BORDEAUX, FRANCE

The 2015 Poitevin is a blend of 55% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. It has a vivid bright bouquet with blackberry, graphite and cedar aromas, great vigor here, very focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, very harmonious with a poised and elegant finish that is top-grade. Excellent. Tasted at the Oenoconseil tasting room in Bordeaux. NEAL MARTIN,

  • 2. BILANCIA SYRAH 2017
    HAWKES BAY, NEWZEALAND

Really lovely colour to this wine, it's a bright red/purple hue and looks almost Pinot like. The appearance is a good indicator to the style as well, in classic Bilancia fashion its fragrance runs more to the red fruit, pepper and spice side of Syrah. Super refreshing, crunchy enlivening fruit and really suave tannins. This is the kind of style of Syrah that lovers of the Northern Rhone will go nuts for. Also, the wood is not invisible but its slick and well handled and mostly sits in amongst the fruit offering just another layer of interest. As is usually the case here the 2017 looks terrific, another great example from one of NZs top producers. TDL

  • 3. MESTA TEMPARNILLO
    UCLES, SPAIN
  • 4. PACCAMORA NERO D'AVOLA 2014
    SICILY, ITALY

The Vineyard are located in “Favara San Cataldo” at about 500 m.s.l. The vines are planted south facing, following the trellis system and guyot pruning. The soil is sandy and clay. After de-stemming and skin maceration for 6 days at 22-24 ° C, the grapes are soft-pressed and then fermented in temperaturecontrolled stainless-steel tanks. The wine is kept there for a few months before being bottled. Very tipical and captivating, with soft tannins and an elegant finish - perfect for a barbecue, grilled steak or vegetable. PRIMAVERA

  • 5. RIVE DRIOTE RIVE GAUCHE COTE DU RHONE 2016
    RHONE VALLEY, FRANCE

Rive Droite Rive Gauche simply means right bank, left bank and the name derives from fruit for the wine being sourced from both sides of the river. It is also a French film starring the rotund wine-nut actor Gerard Depardieu. In 2016 this little beauty has backed up its stellar efforts from the lauded 2915 vintage. It's all about pure up-front fruit flavours that present as big cherry and bright raspberry with lifted sweet spice and full of crunchy and vibrant fruits that flow across the palate. Sweet and savoury at the same time with a lick of garrigue on the finish. This is just pure deliciousness! TDL

  • 6. CABECA DO PORTE DOURO 2012
    DOURO, PORTUGAL
  • 7. CLONAKILLA HILLTOPS SHIRAZ 2016
HILLTOPS REGION (YOUNG), NEW SOUTH WALES

It’s a little bit arms and legs at present but it’s getting there. Strings of tannin, herb notes, juicy stone fruit characters and assorted spices/peppers are all attractive in themselves, but aren’t yet pulling properly together. They will do. Indeed if anything this release is more complex than usual; more Clonakilla in a way. The fruit comes across as fresh, the cherried characters at the blacker end of the spectrum, the tannin fine and a little chalky. It’s going to turn out very well. Even another 12 months in bottle will do it a lot of good. GARY WALSH

  • 8. FINCA LAS MORAS MALBEC 2017
    MEDOZA, ARGENTINA

Big grippy black Malbec, with loads of dense ripe red fruit. This is a great value wine to have with your favorite grilled meat. TDL

  • 9. COLLECTOR MARKED TREE SHIRAZ 2014
    CANBERRA DISTRICT, NEW SOUTH WALES

25% whole bunches, the remainder whole berries, matured for 14 months in French oak (25% new). The usual movement and energy of Collector Wines, the intense bouquet full of exotic spices and black fruits, the palate opening with fine, sweet dark fruits rising to a crescendo of ripe tannins on the finish and aftertaste. (95) JAMES HALLIDAY

  • 10. COULTER C5 BARBERA 2017
    ADELAIDE HILLS, SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Last year’s Coulter Barbera was described as “fresh but not flimsy” and this 2017 release is in a similar mould.
Indeed it’s more complex than your average example of the variety but with no sacrifice in juicy drinkability. The has berried flavour and in good volume too. Florals and assorted herb notes don’t hurt either, a sweet-sour note of balsamic the only pause. CAMPBELL MATTINSON, The Wine Front

  • 11. UNICO ZELO PIPEDREAM NERO D'AVOLA 2017
    ADELAIDE HILLS, SOUTH AUSTRALIA

The most bittersweet of our line-up, one of our most favored wines - restricted by the tiny quantities we get of these vines. Grown on quartz-shot clay in the alpine Northern Hills, Nero reaches a broad density in fruit-ripeness whilst retaining elegance and freshness. A spicy, but powerful red, widely loved and limited quantities. UNICO
